We all know you didn’t show up at the beach to sweat and stay pasty white so what’s the best way to get sun kissed without the 5th degree burns, peels or worse not getting a tan at all?
We asked our mermaid friends with the best glowing, sun kissed skin their secrets and they all had a few things in common that's worth noting. Exfoliation was always included in beauty secrets of tan babes. The best part about exfoliating other than it will get you to your beach body faster is that you don't need to go out and buy an expensive product; the best exfoliants are home made; our favourite is made with coffee grinds and sugar, you can add some cinnamon bark and cypress oil to fight cellulite as well. The key is to exfoliate and hydrate before you get to the beach so your skin can soak up all the moisture and sun kisses. We recommend some yummy organic whipped butters of cacao or shea which don’t absorb into your skin as quickly as coconut oil and in return locks in moisture for longer. You will look and smell like an edible treat even before you get to the beach once you start adding these two self care secrets to your beach day. Studies show that sunscreens with huge list of chemical ingredients and alcohol not only dry your skin but also damages the reefs. So let's hard pass on those and stick to simple formulas; other than exfoliating and buttering up before showing up at the beach remember to hydrate with nourishing juices and water, supplementing with Vitamin E and Astaxanthin will also help your skin develop a deeper tan and keep it longer. And finally when you are ready to hit the beach all hydrated and buttered up here are some of our favourites to throw in your beach bag: baby botanicals SPF30 daily sheer sunscreen, extra virgin coconut oil, rosewater spritzer (homemade), apple cider vinegar pomegranate lemonade (homemade); our hands down most favourite dark tanning lotion by Maui Babe now has a reef safe coconut oil version so ... we won't be caught at the beach without this magic lotion. We have also experimented with glitter and sparkles and since they attract and reflect more rays they also help with getting a darker tan faster although this statement is not approved by FDA. We will have a blog post coming soon on the 101 benefits of wearing glitter. If you were blessed enough to have enjoyed a whole day at the beach and feeling extra crispy by sunset we love to keep fresh aloe spears in the fridge to smoothe an calm the skin. The night after your beach day we do not recommend buttering up as the oils will trap the heat on your skin so opt for aloe or cold yogurt, yep you read that right! Yogurt sun soother was always my favourite massage to get when I was traveling in Indonesia and almost all spas offer this there and the cooling affects are unparalleled by any lotion. Sea you at the beach. Aloha Ke'a Kua.
